...and I figure 'what's the point of mucking about with all this metal fabricating if you can't use it to woo someone?' To that effect, I made a little steel rose for her :)
Started with a piece of rusty scrap sheet that I had lying around and wire-brushed it up.
Next I cut little petals out with a guillotine and bent them in a vice.
This part would have taken much less time if my hacksaw had even half its teeth left:
Then I welded them to a little conical base I'd made with a hole in the middle. That hole is important as you need to weld the final spiral from the underside.
Started at 22:20, finished at 01:05. Injury report: one cut on thumb, one cut on forefinger, one cut on palm of hand and a couple of little burns (teaches me for welding in short sleeves).
Not bad at all :)

That is pretty freaking cool!

Hand polishing this would be a bitch lol.
But pretty awesome, I like it.

Attach a note that says
you STEEL my heart
Hopefully she doesn't assume it means "to temper", and instead just rolls with the pun.

If that doesn't get your dick sucked, nothing will.

Oh my, I think you're going to win the birthday.
![]() 05/01/2014 at 20:56 |

My man that's genius :) I might have to do that
![]() 05/01/2014 at 20:56 |

NICE!
I made my wife a goofy little desk sign for valentine's day. It was a piece of 12 ga mild steel that I "wrote" on with TIG bead, and then I bent up and welded on a little stand.

Diamonds usually work better than metal for me.

Thanks man, and yeah it really would be. I played an oxy-acetylene torch over the edges in the hopes of getting a cool rainbow heat-discolouration thing going on but it didn't turn out quote like I'd hoped.
It's still pretty cool as it's gone a little blue-coloured from the heat, but I'll have to do some more experimenting.

Thanks dude, I'm flattered :)

Hey babe, I made you this from some rusty scraps I had lying about. Hope you like it.
I kid, that is phenomenal work!
![]() 05/01/2014 at 20:59 |

Oh cool :) I was thinking of doing something like that, but I've only got a MIG welder and that'd just make a mess of things.
Much have looked pretty cool.
![]() 05/01/2014 at 21:02 |

Thanks :) you're right on the first count though. Might be even cooler if I showed her what it came from.

The "penmanship" looks like a second grader w/ a severe head injury wrote it. I traced it out w/ a soapstone first but it kind of all went to hell. It's readable though, and my wife thought it was sweet.
![]() 05/01/2014 at 21:05 |

If the wife thinks it's sweet then that's mission accomplished :)
I'm still insanely jealous of BrownDogWelding's skill though. Just look at how beautiful this is:

Wear a scuba tank. You know, so you don't drown in it.

Wicked! :D I'll have to try that with all the lead sheets I have lying around (for my collection of radioactive elements).
![]() 05/01/2014 at 21:12 |
|
nice! Did you find instructions for that somewhere or did you come up with it yourself?
![]() 05/01/2014 at 21:13 |

I've seen them made out of icing before and thought 'how hard can that be in metal. Other than that, just made it up as I went along :)
![]() 05/01/2014 at 21:16 |

Thanks :) I feel lead sheet would be much easier to shape, although you might feel a little rough after handling it with cut hands...
Is the radioactive elements collection just in case one of them makes you a superhero?

You won. Everything.

Thanks :) sod's law I forget to take it with me tomorrow.
![]() 05/01/2014 at 21:24 |

Solid lead metal can't do any harm to open wounds. However, lead fumes are highly toxic unless I weld them together under my fume hood. I'm going blind, so I don't think welding will be a good idea.
I collect periodic table of elements. :)

You can't forget this lol. Man...I could use my welding skills to craft something like that for the girl I went out with yesterday....or a painting.
![]() 05/01/2014 at 21:29 |

Weld me, weld me like you weld your french girls.
![]() 05/01/2014 at 21:36 |

yeah, but diamonds are forever. Metal gifts aren't.
![]() 05/01/2014 at 21:37 |

That's awesome. Well done.

Nicely done :)

Simply awesome! Good luck with the festivities tomorrow.

came here to say this

Engrave her name with...something on there.

Good work! Just FYI, heat discoloration works alright on plain ole carbon steel, but a lot of the cool blueing and other color effects happen on higher carbon content metals and stainless steels. (example is the stainless exhaust on a KTM bike)
![]() 05/02/2014 at 03:46 |
|
Now that's what I was looking for :) I think I needed more localised, and much higher heat than the oxy-acetylene allowed. It worked with welding, but that would have left an almighty mess :S
![]() 05/02/2014 at 04:01 |
|
That'd be cool :) ideally, I'd TIG weld it onto a piece of plate on the underside, but I have neither a TIG welder nor the skill of this chap:

I was more of thinking of a electric engraver....
![]() 05/02/2014 at 04:16 |

I think I might need to get one of those...

Damn, she get you from carmax?
![]() 05/02/2014 at 04:52 |

Oh very cool :) how far have you got? Some of the more volatile ones must be fun
![]() 05/02/2014 at 05:13 |

I hope so :) that way my injuries will be covered on warranty
![]() 05/02/2014 at 05:22 |

I nearly did this morning :S luckily not though
If you come up with any ideas I'd love to see them :)
![]() 05/02/2014 at 05:28 |

Thanks dude, I am rather proud :)
![]() 05/02/2014 at 07:14 |

My line is that diamonds show no creativity whatsoever.
Whether that get me laid or not I don't know yet :S
![]() 05/02/2014 at 07:46 |

Agreed but they are helpful for the less talented among us, such as myself.

You put all of us to shame. Amazing work!

if this doesn't do it... she is a very bad person.

Thankyou :) it went down rather well today

Oh dear. * adjusts my glasses * Let's see here… According to my memo, I have all alkali metals except Cs and Fr, all alkaline earth metals except Ba and Ra, all halogen gases except F and At (only ~3 grams worth of At atoms exist on Earth), all noble gases except Rn, all post-transition metals except Tl, all metalloids except As and Po, all nonmetals except P (I have six grams of it, but it's purple and impure), many light transition metals (upper part of the D block, and I have a few heavy metals like W, Pt, Au and Hg), few lanthanides and only two actinides (Th and U, they're kept in two separate lead lined boxes. Th is very unstable and it's always very hot due to the radioactive activity). I obviously don't have any manmade elements (elements after U, like Pu, Es and the like). I stopped blowing up alkali metals in water because they're starting to become very expensive. I'm more into dissolving metals with a strong oxidiser (like HCl or H2SO4), fill a balloon with some H2, and blow it up.
* reads my comments, tells self "You're such a chemistry nerd" * :P

Very impressive :) ballsy with the more radioactive and reactive elements as well
![]() 05/04/2014 at 19:50 |

Thank you. :) All my reactive elements are kept in sealed glass ampoules filled with Ar gas. I used to store them in mineral oil, but it was too messy. So I started storing them in ampoules.
My son loves Hg, and he always asked me for a permission to look at it. Don't worry, he's not allowed to touch it.
* sighs * Some elements are simply brilliant.
